How can I speed up my pc?

My husband recently hooked up my computer to the internet and at first it was working fine, but one day I used it after he had been using it and it was really slow. He must have done something, though he swears he didn’t do anything. I think maybe he downloaded something that had spyware or adware that is slowing down the computer. How can I speed up my PC? Would it help to get a spyware remover, or should I get a registry cleaner? Does anyone know what would have the best chance of working? Is there a way to check for spyware?
