Nautical Tattoo Gallery

February 26th, 2009 by admin

Sailors were among the first people to make tattoo as art. Explorers were among the first to encounter tattooing among Polynesian nation during their rediscovery of the New World. Hence, sailors adopted the tribal custom and eventually developed a tattoo culture of their own. Symbols and characters from a nautical tattoo gallery represent where the sailors have traveled and what they had experienced. It could include the nautical star, a sea serpent, a siren, sea monster, or map. Sometimes, they are regarded as talismans or protection from evil, bad weather, drowning and sharks. Sailors would also have their wives’ or lovers’ names tattooed in order to remember them during long travels. The vast arrays of nautical tattoo designs gave way to the extensive art present in any tattoo gallery today.
