Getting rid of unwanted pistol shrimp

November 29th, 2009 by admin

Once in a while, something hitchhikes a ride through the live rock into your aquarium. That something includes various pistol shrimp.

I won’t be discussing the benefits or threats such pistol shrimp may present. This post assumes you’ve made up your mind on the subject and the pistol shrimp must go.

So let us study our prey. They are shy, they are burrowers and they are mainly active at night. If you know exactly where they burrow then the task is simple. Get a net and remove the sand that holds the Pistol Shrimp.

If that is not possible then you need to use a trap of some sort. The trap should allow easy entry but not easy escape. A plastic bottle cut in two and inverted is a good design.

Put some food (pellets, mysis shrimp etc) into the trap and place it outside its burrow at night. Repeat until caught.
