Pipettes are tube-like laboratory instruments which use a suction action to draw liquid into the tube and hold it there in order to transport it and transfer it to another piece of equipment.  The are the more complicated, laboratory specific version of the everyday syringe or dropper.  There are many different types of pipette from the more complicated models that use piston drive air displacement down to very simple versions that look like a straw and need to be used along with some kind of suction device.  Maintaining a sterile environment is very important to the quality of tests performed in a laboratory therefore many pipette’s use removable and disposable pipette tips to avoid the possibility of contamination.
